Visit Tyler, TX – Where to Eat and Drink

When one thinks of culinary destinations in Texas, I’m almost 100% positive that Tyler, TX does not come to mind. I’m also 100% positive that that is a mistake that we all have been making. Tyler, TX is a city of good eats, good drinks, and some very interesting residents. It’s also only 1.5 hours east of Shreveport so it’s an easy day trip or weekend getaway destination for a familiar yet different feel. Check out my mini list below of places to eat and drink in Tyler!

Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ
525 S Beckham Ave, Tyler, TX 75702

Like that name states, Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ is indeed famous for the eats they have been dishing up in Tyler for over 50 years. In 2016, the restaurant was number 2 on Business Insider magazine’s Top 50 Barbecue Bestaurants in U.S., they have often make the Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas list in Texas Monthly Magazine, and they have appeared in countless other publications. When one thinks of delicious East Texas barbecue, Stanley’s is sure to be mentioned and rightly so.

It’s delicious, plain and simple. I am a LOVER of brisket and Stanley’s does not disappoint. When ordering you can choose if you want fatty or lean pieces. I’m a median type of girl where I want equal portions of fat and meat, but I also want some crispy bark. Stanley’s cooking process cause the fat to practically melt in your mouth so it doesn’t feel like you have a mouth full of fat and grease. The meat is tender and juicy with a strong smoky and black pepper taste on the bark. The flavor doesn’t just stop at the bark. The meat is perfectly seasoned throughout. Stanley’s has delicious sausage and ribs, but this brisket is definitely my favorite. If you’re feeling adventurous, sandwiches with multiple meats can be found on the menu and of course 2 and 4 meat plates are available. Aside from the good food, the restaurant has a cool patio area where they have live music several nights a week. They also have the “friendliest bar” on the patio. In addition to Texas local beers, they serve up some tasty cocktails like the grapefruit vodka cocktail pictured above.  Good dranks? CHECK! If you’re looking for an extremely laid back barbecue joint experience, Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ is definitely where you need to go.

Roast Social Kitchen
1125 E 5th St, Tyler, TX 75701

Interestingly enough, Roast Social Kitchen is owned by the same family that owns Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ. Don’t worry if you’re not in the mood for barbecue because Roast Social Kitchen is NOT that. I don’t want to limit Roast to simply being a hipster pizza joint with an AMAZING cocktail program, but that is exactly what it is and I am HERE. FOR. IT. Since my initial visit to Roast, I have returned and the menu has changed some, BUT it is still real hipster, still real pizza, and still real amazing cocktail program. Did I mention cocktails on tap? I’m talking Old Fashioneds and Moscow Mules ON TAP.

The pizzas! The pizzas are delicious. Roast has a brick oven straight from Italy that cooks these delicious pies which makes the crust crunchy on the outside, yet tender on the inside and very complementary to whatever toppings are added. If you are in the mood for barbecue, there is a Smoke Stack pizza on the menu that features brisket, Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ barbecue sauce, red onions, and other goodies. You really can’t go wrong with a visit to Roast.

Black Pearl
106 W Erwin, Tyler, TX 75702

If I lived in Tyler, Black Pearl would be MY neighborhood bar. They have great cocktails, great music, friendly and knowledgeable bartenders, and oysters. What else could you want in a bar?

Drinking is pretty straight forward. Either they have good cocktails or they don’t. Black Pearl does. Go drink here while in Tyler.

True Vine Brewing Company
2453 Earl Campbell Parkway, Tyler, Texas 75701

The first craft brewery in Tyler has been making some big moves lately. At the time of my visit, they were located in a 2,000 square foot facility that barely had enough room to house their brewing system, but had a ginormous backyard. Now the brewery is located in a 10,000 square foot facility with 2,000 of that being their pavilion.  I have yet to visit the new location, but the beer alone will have me there soon. The local, craft beer industry is filled with a bunch interesting characters and True Vine fits right in in a good way. Their motto is Integrity, Community, and Love and they embody every aspect of that. When visiting Tyler, do not leave without checking them out.

Tyler is an ever growing city filled with all sorts of places to eat, drink and just have a great time. This list is nowhere near a complete capture of everything the city has to offer. Stay tuned for part 2 of my Tyler, Texas posts which will include what to do while visiting.
