Celebrate Strawberries & Self-Care with Whole Foods Market

*This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Whole Foods Market Shreveport. Although I have received compensation for this post, all views and opinions are 100% my own.”

For the last few months, I feel like I have not only lived, but have been the mayor, governor, and president of Stressville, USA. My personal life has affected my professional life, I am behind on stories, and I have been struggling just to make some sense of everything that has been going on. I’m still loving this life, but I am definitely not loving these moments. In spite of everything, I have had to maintain a smile on my public face and still keep moving. It has been REAL, but work has to be done. I am also learning that working and keeping busy, helps me not focus on everything that is wrong, but helps me focus on doing the things that I love. This particular week’s work included paying a visit to my friends at Whole Foods Market (WFM) Shreveport this week to check out their Celebrate Strawberries promotion and pick some ingredients to prepare a meal for this post.

After getting the “official” Celebrate Strawberries tour, I decided to get the ingredients to make Strawberry Balsamic Quinoa Salad, a Spicy Strawberry Salmon Burger, some Prosecco and Rose’ cocktails using some Strawberry Basil Muddle that I found in the produce section, and strawberry ice cream for dessert. I needed to take the rest of the day to come up with my plan for pictures of everything, so I settled on making my meal on the following day. Little did I know that the following day would cause me to send out the bat signal to a part of my village.

Wednesday, April 11. 2018 is a day that I will never forget. My stress reached Mt. Everest levels of high and at several moments during the day, I felt myself being on the verge of passing out and then having a full on meltdown. I reached out to my friend Sara to invite her over because we both had been joking, but not joking about scheduling a time for a cry. At first she let me know that she could come see me Thursday, but then she noticed the tone of my message and let me know that she could come that evening. That worked perfectly for me because 1. I needed her and 2. I knew I had food and booze that I needed to prepare and could at least offer her some type of compensation for her adjusting her schedule for me. Sara arrived and I immediately crumbled in her arms. I yelled, I cried, I cussed, I kicked, I screamed, I stomped, and I repeated. Sara held me, cried with me, consoled me, and repeated.

After I assumed I had all of my crying out of my system, we decided to get to work. There were recipes to prepare, pictures to be taken, and food to be tasted. First thing was to take a picture of all of the ingredients for each recipe and then get to cooking. After we took the pictures and sipped some cocktails, I decided to reach out to the rest of our foursome coven and invited Michael and Tiana over to discuss everything that has been going on. They both arrived shortly after and I cried my way through cooking my Spicy Strawberry Salmon Burger and Caribbean Salmon Dinner for 2. As I cried and talked, Sara assembled the Strawberry Balsamic Quinoa Salad. After more pictures were taken, it was time to eat and time to stop crying, cussing, screaming, yelling, stomping, and kicking. It was time to appreciate my friends and time to trust the process.

I was surprised that even though I was cooking and dealing with ALL of the emotions, we created a pretty delicious meal. The Strawberry Balsamic Quinoa Salad paired PERFECTLY with the Spicy Strawberry Salmon Burger. I know the description of the burger sounds so weird because how many times have you really eaten strawberries with salmon, but trust me, it was sweet, spicy, savory, and delicious. The salad was light, refreshing, and provided the perfect coolness to balance the spice of the burger. We decided that we did not like using Forty Ounce Wines Rose’ for the Strawberry Basil Muddle Cocktails, but preferred the sweetness and effervescence of La Marca Prosecco with the muddle.

After eating, we sat on my porch, talked about mindless things, ate strawberry ice cream, drank Rose’ and Cava, took selfies, laughed, and loved. It was exactly what I needed and I think they needed it too. A lot of times, we think of self-care as being something that has to be done alone, but my self-care came in the form of a delicious meal from Whole Foods Market and surrounding myself with my friends that I know will hold me up during these times.

Jada! So sorry that you had a rough few days but it’s awesome to have a village to help you get through tough times and even more awesome for you to share your wonderful eats from Whole Foods. I MUST try the salmon patty. Never would have thought about pairing salmon with starwberries. Everything looked delicious. Great post, thanks for sharing!

This piece brought tears to my eyes! All the joy, all the feels!

They call it “comfort food” for a reason. It brings people together and can bring peace and comfort. Strawberries are such happy fruits and perfect for the occasion.

I’m glad to be able to answer your “bat signals” and my soul was fed right along with yours. As for my stomach– oh goodness! That meal was so delicious! How many servings did I have? Two? Three? Who’s counting? And I definitely want to buy that salmon burger for my own household.

To top off the night, sampling the wines on a gorgeous spring night with friends was just what the doctor ordered. I’d never tried those brands but liked their concepts.

I can’t wait to see, read and taste what else you whip up from Whole Foods. <3
