Off to the Races-Shreveport Derby Day

Ladies! It’s time to get out your Fascinators, flamboyant hats and colorful dresses. Gentlemen! It’s time to get out your Sunday’s finest, including pastel colors, seersucker suits!

It’s time for Derby Day at RW Norton Art Gallery!

Yep you “heard” me correctly!

All things Kentucky Derby in Shreveport on Saturday, May 2.

A team of young visionaries in the Shreveport business community have joined forces to present this sure to be fun event–Matt Snyder-PinPoint Local Marketing, Grant Nuckolls-Twisted Root Burger Co., Andrew Crawford-Rhino Coffee, Chase Boytim-Bears on Fairfield, Nick and Elizabeth McElhatten-Kings Hardware and the folks at RW Norton Art Gallery.

When I asked Matt Snyder about the motivation behind Derby Day, he said an event of this magnitude had always been a dream of his.

“The dream has been a lifetime in the making” he said. “Having a high end event in the heart of the city has always been a goal of mine. I started seeing amazing Kentucky Derby parties having huge success across the country and that became the vision of Shreveport Derby Day”

Derby Day AT RW Norton Art Gallery. Let that sink in. In the 50 year history of the Norton, there has never been an event on the lawn until now! Not at the Louisiana but at RW Norton Art Gallery.

“This is just not something you can do in an open to the public environment. Additionally, it was important that the event was in the heart of the city and there is no where more beautiful in Shreveport during spring” said Snyder.

Words cannot describe my level of excitement when I first heard about Derby Day. At that time, I didn’t have any specifics. I’m not even sure I knew where the party was happening. All I knew was, I needed to get my ensemble together because I was IN there! (DHL I am stalking you about my dress!)

Who doesn’t love when they can don their most eye catching spring attire and have a good time?

When I think of the Kentucky Derby I think of hats, dresses and suits. Sure there are races that day, but it’s more about the party and parade of outfits. It is definitely a time to see and be seen.
Shreveport’s Derby Day will uphold that tradition, according to Snyder.

“Our party is all about the tradition and pageantry of Churchill Downs on Derby Day” he said.

Including in that “tradition and pageantry” will be live music by Flow Tribe, food by Rhino Coffee and drinks by Wine Country.

Drinks. Mint Juleps.

In addition to the traditional Mint Julep, Wine Country will serve up The Kentucky Oaks Lilly, which is a stepped up vodka and cranberry, a mojito, Great Raft Brewing Beer and wine.

If live music, screens with the races, unlimited food and drink aren’t enough to win you over, there is more! There will be croquet on the grounds!

Did I mention how excited I am? I’ll see you at the races! Well on the lawn rather.

*Tickets are still available at Kings Hardware, Knox Goodman, or
John Pickens Clothiers but they are moving quickly. You can also purchase tickets online here.

I live western NY and I’ve only ever seen events like this on TV. I wonder what it’s like to attend one.
