Good Eats at The Halal Guys

In 1990, Mohammed Abouelenein, Abdelbaset Elsayed, and Ahmed Elsaka got together and opened a hot dog cart in New York City. As time went by, they noticed there was a large demand for halal food from Muslim cab drivers. Like any good business men, they created a solution for a problem. A platter of chicken and gyro over rice and a new restaurant concept were born, The Halal Guys.

halal
adjective: denoting or relating to meat prepared as prescribed by Muslim law.

Fast forward to 2017.  The Halal Guys now have five carts and multiple restaurants across the United States, South Korea, Philippines, and now Shreveport. Shreveport’s very own The Halal Guys will have its grand opening on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 11am. I was given a preview of the location and you definitely don’t want to miss the grand opening.

Combo Plate with Chicken, Gyro, Hummus, Red Sauce, and White Sauce

The Halal Guys offers a very simple American Halal menu of sandwiches (Chicken or 100% Beef Gyro), platters served with rice, salad, and hot and white sauce (Combo of Chicken and 100% Beef Gyro or Falafel), sides (Hummus, Baba Ghanouj, Falafel, Fries), Baklava, and drinks.

American Halal Food:

  • Much like the United States, American Halal Food is a complex melting pot of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors that are sure to delight
  • Flawlessly cooked, premium quality Halal meats that are seasoned to perfection
  • The Halal Guy’s American Halal Food and meats are sourced and prepared following strict Islamic dietary guidelines for Halal
  • Humane treatment of livestock, high quality ingredients, and ethical choices are bedrocks in imparting a distinctive taste

The Halal Guys pride themselves on being the pioneers of American Halal Food. Logan Trotter, Shreveport’s franchise owner, describes it as “kicked up Mediterranean street food that’s more palatable for Americans” and I have to agree. The chicken and gyro were well seasoned without being over seasoned, the veggies were fresh and crisp, and the portions were very filling.

This is definitely a spot that you guys want to go and try out for yourself. Not only was the food good, but the staff was super friendly and helpful. I laughed several time while visiting with them. The restaurant isn’t officially open yet, but if you roll up in there, they will sell you some food. Don’t tell them I told you that though. Follow their Facebook page to get the official open date.
